Jacie Hachem, Senior Director, Office of Corporate Secretary at  Health Care Service Corporation, is being recognized by Diligent’s Modern Governance 100 program. The Modern Governance 100 is a community of governance professionals who have been nominated for their innovation, resilience, dedication and empathy in the face of a complex and ever-changing world.

Jacie Hachem’s analytical and logistical skills are just some of the elements that make her an integral member of the Health Care Service Corporation team. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hachem worked tirelessly to ensure the board had everything it needed to run its first virtual meeting successfully. As nominator Deondra Cephus, Senior Paralegal at Health Care Service Corporation, explains: “Jacie worked for hours on the logistics, analyzed every scenario possible, worked with IT, meeting participants, individual board members and Diligent reps to introduce new products, test and retest many different options to ensure the board meetings were without flaw.”

This level of attentiveness and dedication has been a consistency in Hachem’s career thus far, but her efforts strengthened still in response to the virtual work environment. “She has always been a great asset to the Board Support Team,” says Cephus, “but since we’ve been working remotely, I’ve seen her skills develop more than I could imagine.”

In addition to providing far-reaching support for the board, Hachem is just as much of an asset to her colleagues outside of the boardroom. “She’s been a great inspiration and mentor to me, and I’ve learned so much about Diligent and a higher level of process and procedure support and development [from her],” Cephus remarks.

How Hachem Uses Diligent

  • To mitigate the risks associated with paper trails, email and confidential information sharing
  • To save 10-20 hours per meeting previously spent collating, preparing and distributing meeting materials manually
  • For virtual meeting management, including video conference detail sharing, electronic signatures, surveys, document permissions and controls, and secure and timely material distribution

Digitizing board management processes has had a positive effect on the board and the larger organization. Hachem reflects that the actual weight of carrying board materials and binders to and from meetings has lifted with the implementation of Diligent Boards: “Not having the users or even us, a board member or senior management carrying binders everywhere…just from that standpoint, [it] definitely has helped a lot of people and they appreciate it.”

Having used Diligent for almost ten years and recognizing the critical nature of the work the organization and the board collectively does, Hachem knows that having the right tools in place is a governance imperative.

“People’s time is valuable. Being able to provide materials, being able to provide information in a quick but efficient manner, I think is really important,” says Hachem.

Being nominated to the Modern Governance 100 isn’t necessarily something Hachem expected would be a milestone in her career: “I’m not much of a tech person. To be recognized for using technology is really awesome.” Guiding the board and senior management through the adoption and ongoing usage of Diligent Boards has been a great responsibility that Hachem has taken on with precision, drive and pride.
